It looks like one of the vaults in the nave, as well as the vault in the transept, caved in. What a mess.

I appreciate the third picture, sh owing the Parisian talking about the fire while holding a lit cigarette.

Well, it’s Paris. Aren’t Parisians born with a cigarette in their mouth?

It’s got good bones, and the trendy neighborhood is still in high demand. Let’s knock out some of these columns to give it more of an open feel, and the catacombs would make a perfect media room. The local poor aren’t tithing or paying indulgences like they used to, but you can make up that income through paid tours.

Les Républicains : Rebuild to 1345 specifications and ban all non-Catholics from entering

La Socialistes : Rebuild as a Temple to Reason with funds reclaimed from billionaires

La République En Marche : Convert to loft apartments and sell them to École graduates.

That’s where the spire went isn’t it? As far as I know it was just where the transept meets the nave and there probably wasn’t any vaulting under it so the bulk of it just went straight down. I read that it contained (yes, just the spire) 250 tonnes of lead which would have gone straight down as well as it melted. I don’t know what the rest of the roof covering was but if it was lead also that’s an enormous weight sitting on the remaining vaulting. I’d rather not stand under it...

The plan so far is to stabilise the nave vaulting and a portion of the north transept and then allow firefighters and people from the culture ministry in to remove the remaini ng artworks which will go to the Louvre’s conservation department.

All things considered, this is about as good an outcome as you could hope for.

It could have been so much worse. It held together much better than I  expected.

You almost could have had a China Syndrome where the molten lead melted straight through into the crypt.

I was literally ill yesterday. I couldn’t watch the news. But yes, the news is better than I think anybody hoped.
